Steve Fossett: Another Round-The-World First
Piloting his Cameron R-550 Roziere, American adventurer
Steve Fossett completed the first solo round-the-world flight by
balloon.

Travelling at speeds that occasionally exceeded 200 miles per hour
(320 km/h), Steve also achieved a new time for the shortest circumnavigation.
Completing his epic journey in just 324 hours 16 minutes he shattered
the previous record of 370 hours and 24 minutes set by Bertrand
Piccard and Brian Jones in 1999 when they made the first ever round-the-world
balloon flight in their Cameron R-650, Breitling Orbiter III.

To
the surprise of many, especially in the media, Breitling Orbiter
3 moved southwest out of Switzerland
crossing France and the Mediterranean before entering North Africa. “Surely
this was the wrong way for a balloon to travel that was supposed
to catch jet-stream winds that raced eastward?” Journalists
queried? “Not at all”, responded the team managing the
Flight Control Centre at Geneva Airport – a team that included
pilots Brian Smith and John Albury, their better halves Cecilia
and Debbie, plus BBAC Chief Observer Sue Tatford. “We are
simply sending Breitling on a tour of launch sites used by unsuccessful
round-the-world balloons.” While it was a joke, the balloon
did pass close to Almeria in Spain (Cable and Wireless) and Marrakech,
Morocco, (ICO/VirginGlobal).

In fact the route was exactly the one planned by meteorologists
Pierre Eckert and Luc Trullemans, because once over Mauritania
in North Africa the forecast change in wind speed and direction
took place and the balloon started to head across Mali, Algeria,
Libya and Egypt.

While over Mali the pilots took the opportunity to remove four
additional and now empty fuel cylinders – added because of the
anticipated slow start – and a collection of huge icicles that
were hanging from the mouth of the balloon and parts of the gondola!
This was unnecessary weight that might have affected the performance
of the craft.

Sensors on the balloon reported that it was behaving perfectly
while the Control Centre in Geneva calculated that fuel consumption
was lower than anticipated. Hopes began to rise. If the weather
remained kind the first RTW flight was becoming a serious possibility.

India and Bangladesh were overflown without hitch. When the balloon crossed Burma
(Myanmar) it was a return to the country that Bertrand had visited when he landed
Breitling Orbiter 2 there in 1998 – but this time they did not stop! Things were
going well with the flight.

Of course, there was still the problem of China ahead. Following a visit to Beijing
by pilot Bertrand Piccard and Alan Noble of Cameron Balloons, the Chinese government
had granted the Breitling team permission to fly across Chinese airspace above
47 degrees North, or below 26 degrees South. The balloon breezed across southern
China South of the 26th parallel – but only just. At one point it came within
25 miles.

Crossing the Pacific Ocean by balloon is not a trip that should be embarked upon
by those who don’t like flying over water. Bertrand and Brian are numbered
among those people, and as they left the coast of China they admitted their worries
to the Control Centre staff in Geneva. But on they went. And as they went their
spirits dropped as the wind speed dropped. The jet streams predicted by the meteorologists
weren’t there.

Control Centre staff had another problem to think about. Should they move the
balloon North towards the Polar jet stream, which would have meant flying over
some areas of rain but at least the high speed winds were already established
on the charts, or South to meet a subtropical jet that meteorologist Luc Trullemans
forecast would appear, but which didn’t presently exist.

Alan Noble, acting as Flight Director for the Breitling team, decided to gamble
on the Belgian meteorologist being correct. He knew that air traffic control
restrictions would reduce the height, and therefore the speed, at which the balloon
would be able to travel if he opted to send it via the Polar jet as this wind
would eventually take the Roziere balloon over the busy North Atlantic. The quieter
southern route had no ATC restrictions. It turned out to be a good decision.

Should they continue their flight across the Atlantic? Fuel was adequate for
a fast flight but if the winds continued to fail them they might not reach the
West coast of Africa.

And again, as forecast, they found the jet stream that would take them over the
Atlantic. It was fast; so fast that it soon became obvious that not only had
they adequate fuel reserves to complete the flight at 9 degrees 27 minutes West
– their furthest point West after leaving Switzerland – but would be able to
fly-on and find a more hospitable landing site than sub-Saharan Mauritania.

You are cleared to continue across the Atlantic.”, they were told from control.”We
aren’t going to stop anyway, because to stop is the certain way to fail.”,
was Bertrand’s confident reply!

Before launch 19 days earlier Brian Jones had predicted a landing by the pyramids
in Egypt. It looked as though he might have guessed correctly.

Having celebrated the successful completion of the round-the-world flight with
champagne, Alan journalists took a private jet to Egypt where by good luck –
or clever anticipation and navigation if you believe Alan’s version – they
were present as the balloon began its landing approach and were able to help
talk Brian, who was at the controls, by VHF radio to a safe landing…landing…landing!” I
was a bit ashamed of the first touchdown, I almost got it right with the second,
but the final one was good – especially considering I’d never landed a
balloon of this type before.” Said Brian afterwards.

So the greatest balloon flight in aviation history ended safely.

The Cameron Roziere envelope with its insulating double skin had behaved perfectly
and performed exactly as predicted by computer simulation. The advanced Kevlar
and carbon fibre gondola had kept the crew alive and well for 21 days with external
temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees C. and at altitudes in excess of 38,000
feet (11,737 m) where air pressure is only one quarter that on the surface. There
had been some irritating system problems, but redundancy and good communications
with engineers on the ground, especially Pete Johnson and Dave Boxall at Cameron
Balloons, had overcome these.

Cameron
Balloons Ltd. — our counterpart in the UK, recently performed
the certification test flights for a Z-600 (600,000 cu.ft.) balloon.

The enormous hot-air balloon was flown with sand ballast to replicate
the weight of the passengers. This is the largest passenger balloon
built to date by Cameron Balloons, despite buidling a 20+ passenger
500,000 cu. ft. balloon with a double-decker basket nearly 30 years
ago.

This solid red envelope was built for Magic Horizon in Egypt. The
32-passenger basket is 20 ft long and nearly 5 ft wide and has
its own trailer and winch system to assist the crew to manage it.
The basket alone weighs nearly a thousand pounds, and the entire
system took about 20 weeks to build.

The envelope stands about 125 ft tall and 110 feet wide. It consumed
over 2700 yards of fabric and nearly 12 miles of thread. The gross
lift of the balloon is 12,000 lb.

Here
at Cameron Balloons we like to listen to our customers. We’ve
had numerous requests to build solid floor baskets. Although
we still prefer the added flexibility and shock-absorbency
that an all-woven basket offers, we recognize that there are
some environments where extra ruggedness of a solid floor model
can be an advantage.

In the spirit of ‘having your cake and eating it too’, we’ve
introduced a line of solid-floor Aristocrat models, aptly named
Aristocrat-SF™.
They’re available in a range of sizes in both flat-top and swept-top
configurations.

Call the factory for pricing and availability.

Two Z-77’s have recently been constructed for the upcoming Super Bowl. One balloon features the NFL shield and Super Bowl XLII text along with two banners that feature the New England Patriots and New York Giants logo’s. The other balloon features the Super Bowl XLII logo and two banners which feature the New England Patriots and New York Giants helmets, after the game one team’s helmet will be removed and replaced with a Super Bowl Champions banner.

The balloons will be present at various events through out Super Bowl week in Phoenix, Arizona, operated by Kevin Flanagan and Marsha Treacy.

Under construction is a new special shape for Greenpeace. We are very excited to be building this representation of the Earth which will stand at over 76 ft tall and approximately 60 ft wide. Like all special shapes it will have a ‘larger than life’ presence at each event on its tour (despite being one .00014 % of life-size).Due for completion early this fall, look for the new Greenpeace balloon at venues around the US and beyond.

Lorraine had been with us since the early days of Cameron Balloons, and was an exceptional seamstress. She joined us in May of 1985, before we moved into our current building. Many of our customers and dealers have had the pleasure of meeting and working with Lorraine. She was quite a character and was known for her love of Corvettes — particularly racing them. There was nothing she couldn’t figure out how to sew, from a difficult repair, to the most complex special shape, and she reveled in the thrill of the most challenging projects.

Lorraine had been hinting about retirement for some time, so we knew we could not keep her forever, but none of us expected her departure from Cameron Balloons to be so sudden. She came to work on Tuesday morning as normal, but within half an hour she was pale and not feeling well. We managed to convince her to let us take her to the Emergency Room at the U of M. After numerous tests and scans, she was diagnosed with an aortic dissection (a tearing of the aorta). Lorraine underwent a very lengthy and difficult surgery that lasted most of the day. Unfortunately the damage to her aorta proved to be too extensive and severe for the surgery to work, and she passed away about 11pm that night.

It is never easy to pass along news of a death, and it is particularly hard when that person has been part of your ‘family’ for 23 years. I had the pleasure of working with Lorraine for 15 of those years, and the time has gone by too quickly.

All of us here at the factory ask that you keep Lorraine and her family in your thoughts and prayers, and help us celebrate her life and her 23 years of contributions and dedication to the ‘Cameron family’.

The company that hosts our website and email was offline for about 28 hours starting around noon on December 15th. Due to complications from some roof leaks at their facility, they had to move the servers to a new building, causing our site (and many others) to be offline.

The outage started shortly after noon on Tuesday the 15th and service was restored around 4pm on the 16th. If you sent email to us during this time, please re-send in case it was deleted from the mail queue by one of the servers.

Again, please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

We will be closed for the Holidays on December 25th and 26th, and also on January 1st and 2nd.

We are pleased to have recently built a Z-90 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the movie “The Wizard of Oz”, and its upcoming release on BlueRay DVD. In addition to the famed ‘yellow brick road’ the balloon features inkjet artwork of the Ruby Slippers and of course Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin man, Cowardly Lion, and Toto.

Operated by Marsha Treacy of AeroSports, Inc., the balloon will be travelling to events throughout the country. (photos courtesy of AeroSports Inc.)

Made to promote the Disney/Pixar movie “UP”, Cameron Balloons recently produced this replica of the balloon shown in the movie. Actually it’s really 541 balloons, that’s one 84,000 cu. ft. hot air balloon and 540 tiny inflated appendages to resemble a cluster of toy helium balloons.

To complete the effect, the surface of the balloon was injet printed, and an inflated 3-D façade of the movie’s house was created to encapsulate the basket.

This special shape balloon is being operated on its European tour by Andrew Holly’s ‘Exclusive Balloon Company’.

We are pleased to have recently built two balloons, a Bottle-105 & a Z-77, to promote the lightest beer from Budweiser – Select 55. At only 55 calories Select 55 is the lightest beer in the world and the marketing team at Anheuser-Busch saw the perfect association between their new light beer and lighter than air aircraft. When inflated the bottle stands over 160 ft. tall, which makes it over 200 times taller than the real thing, and nearly 7 times larger than the inkjet bottle pictured on the Z-77.

Like the famous phrase: “Mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow”, over the last 40 years, Cameron Balloons has grown from very humble beginnings to become the World’s most popular brand of balloons.

Most importantly, we couldn’t have done it without you. Without the support and feedback from balloonists like you, we couldn’t have developed the products and services we offer.

We are very proud, for example, to have built more special shapes

than all the other manufacturers around the globe combined.

We’re equally proud to service every type of balloonist, whether sport flyer, competitor, corporate operator, ride pilot, or gas balloonist.

Forty years and over 8,000 Cameron Owners later, we’re still going strong – building new balloons, and developing new products to make ballooning better and more enjoyable for pilots, passengers, and crew alike.

Thank you for helping us grow and for making Cameron the #1 brand of balloons for more than two decades in a row – we couldn’t have done it without you!

8x the Strength

You’ve heard all about the legendary benefits of our Hyperlast™ fabric, but here’s something you haven’t heard. For a limited time, Hyperlast™ is half-off!

It’s very simple, for any new envelope- or system- order placed between May 15th and June 15th 2014, Hyperlast™ will be half price! Whether you want just one row of Hyperlast™, or the entire balloon, the offer is the same – half price.

Why not enjoy the benefits of the fabric that has up to eight times the tear strength of rip-stop fabrics – even those fabrics with odd-shaped patterns.

What’s more, other standard fabrics, or even so-called heavy-duty fabrics are virtually the same weight, but with none of the benefits.

Don’t be fooled by fabrics that claim to be heavy-duty, but all they offer is heavy. Hyperlast™ has double the tensile strength and up to eight times the all-important tear strength compared to typical rip-stop fabrics.

So with a Cameron you have your choice: light-weight high-performance Caliber™ fabric that never goes porous, or it’s heavier-duty cousin Hyperlast™ that gives you exceptional tear strength & tensile strength and never goes porous either.

What’s not to love? Whether you want light-weight or heavy-duty we have great-looking fabrics that will keep you enjoying ballooning for a long, long time.

Call your Cameron Representative for more details.

The idea of flying a brand new balloon next year is probably appealing enough, but we’re giving you a dozen more reasons to start the season with a Cameron.

That’s right, Fall Special time is here! Our annual Fall savings event starts October 1st and the first twelve lucky balloonists will save big on their next balloon.

How big? For any envelope you’ll save a dollar per pound of gross lift, up to $4,200. If you order a complete system we throw in some additional goodies such as polyskids, cushion floor, and more.

Why do we give you suchc big savings? We want to build effciently over the winter and we want to pass those savings along to you, so we offer

some enticing Fall Specials that make it smart and easy to plan ahead. Needless to say you can save a bundle and avoid the spring rush by making your decisions early.

There just one small catch. We can’t give everyone this special deal, so Fall Specials are limited in number and only available through November 15th, 2014 – if they last that long.

The savings are impressive, the terms are simple, and the satisfaction of owning a new Cameron will last a very long time.

For complete details about how to save on your next Cameron, contact the factory or your local Cameron Dealer before the Specials go into hibernation for the year.
